They Make Air Freshener from Balinese Volcanic Rainwater

Blue Stone Botanicals, Bali's fair-trade aromatherapy brand, makes all manner of nice-smelling things.

Blue Stone Botanicals is a social enterprise in Bali

Imagine being seated next to an automatic air-freshener that releases a heavy, synthetic perfume every two minutes... on a 10-hour train ride. Yep. That's what happened to founder of Blue Stone Botanicals, Satria, while he was travelling from Yogyakarta to Jakarta. Reeling from a headache and nausea upon exiting the train, it was the tipping point he needed to start a company that created products using only natural ingredients – he had been toying with the idea after completing his masters in the UK and noticing many beauty companies there preferring to use Indonesia’s herbs, flowers and spices.

Enter Blue Stone Botanicals. The range includes carries aromatherapy mists, massage oils, soaps, body balms and essential oils.

Supporting rural communities and local suppliers

Satria is dedicated to continuing the age-old plant-based healing wisdom from the people of Bali and Java. All of their products are hand-made on the islands using natural ingredients found on its own volcanic lands and rainforests. They stay away from preservatives and additives, do not use any palm oil, are cruelty-free and contain no animal products. Check, check and check!

The social enterprise works with local essential oil distillers who are based in rural communities and grow their own plants and spices. The leaves and twigs that they use for distilling, are not commonly harvested for the food or spice trade – this means an extra source of income for these villagers.

They have also introduced an initiative for women living in remote villages on Bali's volcanic mountains, to collect rainwater that is used in their popular aromatherapy mists. The practice is environmentally-friendly and empowers these women to earn their own keep.

It's worth mentioning that Blue Stone Botanicals employs mostly women, and mostly from Bali, giving them a safe environment to work in, with fair working hours and a flexible schedule to accommodate time spent with their family and participating in community activities – a very important aspect for the Balinese. The company tops it all off with health insurance covering even their families. Don't you wish your boss was like this?

That experience on the train led to the creation of the Bali Rain Mists, an alternative to synthetic air-fresheners. It's made with untouched rainwater collected from the slopes of Bali's volcanos, further purified with ceramic and carbon filters, then mixed with locally-distilled essential oils. We suggest having the Lemongrass (120,000 rupiah [approx. USD8.65] for a 100ml bottle) mist sitting on your desk at work. The mix of uplifting lemongrass and calming lavender essential oils will come in handy during times of stress! It's also suitable for use on your skin as a hydrating boost.

The other highly recommended product is the Hair and Scalp Tonic (168,000 rupiah [approx. USD12.10] for a 118ml bottle). It's created with a generations-old Balinese herbal recipe, containing locally-sourced kukui nut oil, coconut oil and essential oils of ylang-ylang, lemongrass, patchouli and rosemary. This floral-herbal scented blend is relaxing and nourishes the scalp tissue and living hair roots. Massage into your hair and scalp and let it sit for several hours before washing off, to get soft, bouncy, shiny hair!

So, go on, bring a bit of Bali rejuvenation home with you – you’ll feel good using their products, and the communities will benefit from your ethical spending.
